In the Middle Ages in the Moldavian principality there was built a network of fortifications that protected the population from enemy attacks. Some fortresses were built long before the formation of an independent state of Moldova, others – by Moldovan rulers.
Ruins of fortifications, fortresses and castles, which were built of stone and brick, can be seen to this day, however, other fortifications which were of wooden construction have long since sunk into oblivion.
The most famous fortifications in Moldova are Soroca are Hotin fortresses on the Dniester, Belgorod-Dniester fortress (Cetatea Alba), Chilia fortress on the Danube. There are also Romanesque, Tsetsinskaya, Neamt and Suceava Throne Fortresses.
